24 Sep Tiles, panels, or paint? How to pick the right bathroom wall finish?
The finish you choose for your bathroom walls ties the whole space together, prevents moisture damage, and can even make cleaning less of a chore. The difficult part is deciding between tiles, panels, or paint. Each option has its own strengths and limitations, and the “right” answer usually depends on how you actually use your bathroom from day to day.
Tiles are timeless but high-maintenance.
Tiles are the old faithful of bathroom design. They are completely waterproof, tough enough to last for decades, and available in many different styles, including glossy porcelain, rustic natural stone, you name it. A beautifully tiled wall can instantly make a bathroom feel more finished and even add a touch of luxury.
But grout is the catch. Those little lines between tiles need regular care if you want to keep them free from stains and mould. On top of that, laying tiles properly is not really a DIY-friendly job.
If you don’t mind a little extra maintenance and want a finish that will last many years, tiles are probably the option you will be happiest with.
Panels are practical and modern.
Bathroom wall panels are made from PVC or similar materials. They create smooth, waterproof surfaces with no grout lines at all. You can wipe them clean in seconds. Panels also tend to be quicker and cheaper to install than tiles.
The trade-off is that they don’t always have the same texture, depth, or natural feel that you would get from stone or ceramic tiles. Still, for many people, the low-maintenance appeal outweighs that.
If easy cleaning and practicality are at the top of your list, panels are very hard to beat.
Paint is quick, cheap, and flexible.
If you want colour without commitment, paint the room. It is the most affordable option, and since you can repaint whenever your mood or style changes, it is also the most flexible.
Just make sure that you are using moisture-resistant bathroom paint, or condensation will ruin the effect.
And while painted walls look great on ceilings or on upper sections of the room, they are not made to handle constant splashes or standing water. The best solution is to paint the upper walls for colour and personality, and use tiles or panels on the lower half to handle the messier side of daily use.
Professional fitting is necessary.
Even the most expensive tiles or panels will disappoint if they are poorly installed. Installation issues like crooked grout lines, poor waterproofing, or loose fittings can all lead to leaks or mould later. A professional bathroom company will make sure that the finish looks seamless and stands the test of time.
