How do I make a small bathroom feel larger?

Small bathrooms are hard to get right. They can feel tight, especially if more than one person is using them or you are trying to fit in storage. Even when you try to keep it clean and organised, it can end up feeling crowded.

But just because a bathroom is small does not mean it has to feel uncomfortable or look dull. With good design and some practical changes, a small bathroom can be both beautiful and functional.

At ACAS Bathrooms, we have helped many homeowners around the North East work with tight bathrooms. We have seen all kinds of layouts, and we know how to make small bathrooms more efficient.

The function should guide the bathroom design.

Before choosing tiles or taps, we look at how the room is being used. What do you actually need in there? What do you use every day, and what could be simplified? Not every bathroom needs a full-sized bath. Others can do without large units or deep counters.

Our designers will talk to you to understand your daily routine. When do you use the bathroom most? What is getting in the way? We find that simple changes like moving the toilet or adding a walk-in shower can make the room feel more open.

We see this a lot in older homes. The original layouts may not always fit how people live now. So we move things around, clear space, and make the whole room more practical.

Use design ideas that have proven to work.

There are many tips out there, but not all of them work in real life. At ACAS, we stick to ideas we have seen succeed in actual homes.

For example, floating sinks or toilets let you see more of the floor, which tricks the eye and makes the room feel bigger. We also like wide tiles with fewer grout lines to reduce visual clutter. And instead of putting things out on open shelves, we recommend built-in options like drawers under the sink or shelves in the wall. That will keep your bathroom organised without taking up more room.

You can see many of these solutions on display in our bathroom showrooms in Sunderland.

Let materials set the tone of the room.

When space is tight, every material you choose makes a bigger impact. The right tile or finish can change the feel of the space completely. For example, glossy tiles bounce light around to brighten up darker bathrooms. At the same time, softer textures and light colours can make the room feel more relaxing. Small details like a good mirror, warm lighting, or even where the towel rail is installed can also change how the room feels.
