03 Jan Design secrets for a warm and welcoming bathroom
A bathroom can be peaceful and spa-like, or a cold and uninviting afterthought you try to escape as quickly as possible. If your bathroom feels more like the second one, it is time for some changes.
Whether you want to redo the whole space from the ground up or make some small design changes, designing a warm and welcoming bathroom is easier than you think. AND you don’t need to spend a lot of money or be a design expert to do it.
Choose warm, neutral colours to give your bathroom a balanced look.
Too much white in a bathroom can make it look too much like a hospital, whereas too many dark or earthy tones can make the room feel small and sad. The best colours to use are soft, warm shades like light grey, beige, or light taupe. These colours add depth to your bathroom without feeling oppressive or claustrophobic, and they complement nearly every fixture you have there.
If you want to add some colours, do it sparingly. A soft sage green towel or a warm peach accent wall can give you that extra colour pop, but be sure your overall bathroom design matches and flows together. Using too many contrasting colours can make your bathroom feel confusing and messy.
Use natural materials and soft textures to warm up your bathroom.
Bathrooms can sometimes feel a little too smooth with all those shiny tiles, glossy fixtures, and mirrors everywhere. While these elements serve practical purposes, they can make your bathroom look stark, cold, and unwelcoming.
In order to make your bathroom feel warmer and cosier, you will want to introduce some texture. For example, woven baskets, a wooden stool, or a soft, moisture-resistant rug can soften the hard edges. Even stacking up some fluffy towels can make the bathroom feel a lot more welcoming.
Use lighting to improve your bathroom’s mood and functionality.
Using different types of lights, like soft ambient lights paired with more focused task lighting, can make your bathroom cosier and more useful. Adding a dimmer switch is also a nice touch for those relaxing evening baths.
If your bathroom has a window, maximise its potential. Don’t block it with heavy, dark blinds or thick curtains that can make the room feel closed off and gloomy. Instead, go for frosted glass or sheer curtains that keep things private but still let in plenty of natural light.
Improve your bathroom comfort with practical heating upgrades.
Radiant floor heating is not just a nice-to-have but also an excellent way to keep your home warm and comfortable in the winter. But if radiant heating is not in your budget, a space heater or even a thick, plush bath mat can still work.
And since you are investing in so many new upgrades, why not get a heated towel rack as well? There is nothing like wrapping yourself in a warm towel after stepping out of the shower.
